01. The Challenge

The Constraint: Long-Length Overhang, Multiple Ferry Chokepoints, and Bevel Integrity

Clean water and irrigation infrastructure projects in eastern Indonesia are frequently vulnerable to supply chain disruptions caused by geographic isolation. In this mobilization for PT. Rapid Infrastruktur Indonesia, hundreds of metric tons of large-diameter 12-meter steel pipeline sections manufactured in Mojokerto, East Java, had to reach an inland trenching corridor on the island of Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

The route involves three major water barriers and over 650 kilometers of diverse road infrastructure, creating critical engineering constraints:

  • 12-Meter Length & Tail Swing: Standard Indonesian flatbed trucks have 9-to-10 meter beds. Carrying 12-meter rigid pipes on substandard equipment creates excessive rear overhang (overhang tail swing), causing high torsional vibration, tail clipping during sharp turns, and potential structural sag over long highway transits.
  • Vulnerability of Pipe Bevels and External Coatings: The pipes were pre-coated with 3-layer polyethylene (3LPE) corrosion inhibitors and pre-beveled for automated field girth welding. Any metal-on-metal collision, abrasive strapping rubbing, or drop impact on the pipe ends deforms the bevel geometry—requiring on-site re-machining and halting the entire welding spread.
  • Three Consecutive Strait Ferry Bottlenecks: Reaching Sumbawa requires crossing the Bali Strait (Ketapang to Gilimanuk), driving across the length of Bali, crossing the Lombok Strait (Padangbai to Lembar), crossing Lombok, and taking a third ferry across the Alas Strait (Kayangan to Poto Tano). Port congestion, ferry ramp weight limits, and ramp incline angles regularly strand long-chassis trucks.
02. Engineering & Route Logistics

The Plan: Extended Chasis, Rubber Stanchions, and Priority Ferry Manifests

DSK Logistics established an integrated land-bridge corridor designed to keep the cargo moving continuously while safeguarding pipe geometry at every stage:

Dedicated 40ft Extended Flatbed & Cradling System

We deployed dedicated 40-foot three-axle Tronton flatbeds equipped with heavy steel vertical stanchions lined with dense vulcanized neoprene rubber. Custom timber saddle blocks were shaped to match the pipe radius, with soft high-tensile composite webbing straps replacing chains to eliminate any friction or gouging against the 3LPE external coatings.

Heavy plastic bevel protectors with internal steel expansion clips were locked onto every single pipe end prior to loading, with DSK QA inspectors logging visual inspection passes before truck departures.

To overcome the multi-island ferry bottlenecks, DSK operations partnered with ASDP Indonesia Ferry at Ketapang, Padangbai, and Kayangan, booking prioritized commercial freight manifests that allowed our convoys to roll onto scheduled Ro-Ro ferries without waiting in multi-day general public truck queues.

03. Execution

The Execution: Rolling Convoys, Tidal Ramp Management, and Hinterland Stringing

The pipe convoys moved in synchronized groups of 4 to 6 prime movers, accompanied by dedicated DSK escort vehicles equipped with warning strobes and radio communications:

  • Leg 1 (Mojokerto to Banyuwangi): Transited eastern East Java toll corridors, bypassing congested urban bypasses with night driving and arriving at Ketapang Port under pre-cleared logistics documentation.
  • Leg 2 (Bali Strait to Lombok Strait): Completed the 45-minute crossing to Gilimanuk. Convoys traversed the southern Denpasar bypass during off-peak morning hours under provincial Dishub escort, boarding the larger oceanic Ro-Ro ferry at Padangbai for the 4.5-hour crossing across the deep Lombok Trench.
  • Leg 3 (Lombok to Alas Strait to Sumbawa): Cleared Lembar Port, crossed central Lombok via the high-grade bypass to Kayangan Port, and completed the final 1.5-hour Alas Strait crossing to Poto Tano in western Sumbawa.
  • Final Mile (Poto Tano to Trenching Right-of-Way): Navigated narrow provincial roads in Sumbawa with pilot trucks managing oncoming rural traffic, delivering directly onto the pipeline right-of-way (ROW) staging areas.

At destination, DSK mobile crane crews using non-marking nylon round slings and padded hook attachments offloaded and strung each pipe directly alongside the pre-dug trenching line, ready for fit-up.

04. Results

The Outcome: 100% Bevel Preservation and Schedule Acceleration

Across hundreds of delivered joints, joint-end ultrasonic inspection and bevel angle gauging showed zero transit damage or out-of-round deformation:
